In the early days, Panera, once known as the St. Louis Bread Company, distinguished itself with its commitment to quality bread. Founded in 1987 in Kirkwood, Missouri, it prided itself on crafting everything in-house. Founder Ken Rosenthal emphasized the process required for perfect sourdough, highlighting the challenge for large commercial bakeries to replicate its artisanal qualities.
The name and the menu have changed a lot over the past 37 years. Now, the company once known for its bread is dealing with two deaths over charged lemonade. A recent essay in The Nation links the company's story with many other companies obsessed with growth.
Keep an eye out for more updates throughout March, and if you're a MyPanera member, you'll get exclusive sneak peeks before the official launch in April.
