World reacts to US bombing of Venezuela, ‘capture’ of Maduro

International leaders reacted swiftly on Saturday morning as President Trump confirmed U.S. military strikes in Venezuela and announced the capture of the country’s leader, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife. Many U.S. adversaries, including some of Venezuela’s nearest neighbors, condemned the strikes, while other governments around the world called for deescalation and voiced concern for their citizens in the Latin American nation. Colombia “Alerting the whole world that they have attacked Venezuela,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro wrote in a series of statements posted on the social media platform X. “The Republic of Colombia reiterates its conviction that peace, respect for international law, and the protection of life and human dignity must prevail over any form of armed confrontation,” Petro said. Russian missile hits educational institution, kills five in Ukraine’s Odesa

By Iryna Nazarchuk Reuters A Russian missile attack on an educational institution in a popular seafront park in the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odesa on Monday killed at least five people and injured 32, local officials said. Regional governor Oleh Kiper, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said that in addition to those killed in the attack, one man died after suffering a stroke attributed to the strike. Kiper said eight of the injured were in serious condition, including a 4-year-old child. Among the injured were another child and a pregnant woman. Reuters Television footage showed the roof of the ornate building, a private law academy, all but destroyed after the strike. Firefighters were directing water on small fires still burning. “Monsters. Beasts. Savages. Scum. Columbia threatens to suspend pro-Palestinian protesters after talks fail

By Julia Harte Reuters Columbia University’s president said on Monday that talks with pro-Palestinian protesters over the dismantling of an encampment on the Ivy League campus had failed and urged them to voluntarily disperse or face suspension from school. President Nemat Minouche Shafik said days of talks between student  organizers and academic leaders  had failed to break a stalemate over the tent encampment set up to protest Israel’s  war in Gaza . Shafik in a statement said Columbia would not divest assets that support Israel’s military, a key demand of the protesters, but offered to invest in health and education in Gaza, and make Columbia’s direct investment holdings more transparent. Protesters have vowed to keep their encampment on the Manhattan campus until Columbia meets three demands: divestment, transparency in Columbia’s finances and amnesty for students and faculty disciplined for their part in the protests.
