Russian drone strike kills 2, wounds 14 in Ukraine’s Odesa

Two people were killed and at least 14 wounded when a Russian drone smashed into a residential high-rise in Ukraine’s Black Sea city of Odesa, authorities said on Saturday. Three children were among the wounded in the overnight attack, with one in critical condition, said regional Governor Oleh Kiper. Footage posted by the State Emergency Service showed firefighters battling a blaze and rushing residents down a dark stairwell in the 21-storey building. Russia has stepped up drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities in recent weeks as diplomatic efforts to end the nearly three-and-a-half-year-old war have stalled. Cities with the worst commute in Illinois

Image
When the COVID-19 pandemic made millions of Americans remote workers, it also abruptly ended many of the commutes that bookend the workday. As some of those workers return to the office, conversations around the drawbacks of commutes have become more intense. For a while, those workers enjoyed more time in the morning and evening that wasn't spent simply traveling to and from work—an unpaid portion of the day that ate up time and energy. And it's not a small amount of time, either: Pre-pandemic, the average commute in the U.S. was a hair over 27 minutes one way, according to Census Bureau data. It was a record high. Cumulatively, 27 minutes each way translates to 54 minutes a day, or four-and-a-half hours per week. That's 18 hours a month and 216 hours a year spent commuting. Those who commute know it's not particularly idyllic. While a very small portion of workers live in the ideal scenario—a short, walkable distance from the office, along a sidewalk that is presuma...

Pedro Grifol irked by Luis Robert Jr. communication breakdown, not his work ethic

Image
Luis Robert Jr. was not in the lineup Sunday due to hamstring tightness. AP Photos White Sox manager Pedro Grifol has no problems with Luis Robert Jr.’s work ethic. It’s Robert’s communication that could use some improvement. Before Sunday’s game with the Rays, Grifol said he didn’t know Robert was feeling hamstring tightness Saturday. Robert was not in the lineup Sunday, Grifol said, because of that hamstring and not because of what happened in the first inning Saturday. “He was pulled out of the game for not hustling down the line and the expectations that we have here as a ballclub,” Grifol said. “He’s not playing today because he was a little tight yesterday, apparently. So we are going to err on the side of caution.” Robert told the media Saturday night he was feeling soreness, and not Grifol. That’s the part of Saturday night’s episode that bothered the Sox manager. Grifol understands that players want to be on the field to help their teams, especially ones that ...

Bears take speedy WR Tyler Scott in fourth round

Image
Bears fourth-round draft pick Tyler Scott (21) had 54 receptions for 899 yards and nine touchdowns at Cincinnati last season. Photo by Dylan Buell/Getty Images The Bears selected Cincinnati wide receiver Tyler Scott in the fourth round (No. 133) of the NFL draft. The 5-10, 177-pound Scott has two notable attributes the Bears are looking for — speed and short-area quickness to get open off the line of scrimmage. Scott ran a 4.44 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine and a 4.37 40 at Cincinnati’s pro day. Scott started 20 games in three seasons at Cincinnati and had modest production until last season, when he had 54 receptions for 899 yards (16.6 average) and nine touchdowns in 11 games. He had 30 receptions for 520 yards (17.3 average) and five touchdowns in 2021. “Love his speed. Great kid. Tough kid,” Bears scout Ryan Cavanaugh said. “He can really take the top off. Justin’s going to like throwing to him deep — he does that well. I think he surprised us with route runni...

Bears draft Texas RB Roschon Johnson in Round 4

Image
The Bears drafted Texas running back Roschon Johnson on Saturday. Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images The Bears drafted a Texas running back — but not Bijan Robinson. Instead of the first-round star, the Bears landed on Roschon Johnson, the Longhorns’ backup and an honorable mention All-Big 12 player last year, with Pick 115 on Saturday. In four seasons with the Longhorns — which comprised only five starts — he ran 392 times for 2,190 yards. “I never really viewed myself as like a backup,” he said. “Regardless of who was getting the carries, I tried to prepare myself as if I was the starter. I didn’t really let the perspective of me being a backup have an effect on me. Just kinda take it day to day and try to increase my role on the team, whether that was on special teams behind Bijan or at running back. “I just kinda flipped my perspective, and I think it paid off.” He’ll be part of a Bears running back rotation that includes D’Onta Foreman and Khalil Herbert. The Bear...

Alarm helps St. Louis County Powerball player realize he won $1M

ST. LOUIS -- You have around six months to claim any winning lotto ticket from a drawing in Missouri. That's why one player has an alarm to check his tickets every three months. That came in handy when he discovered he had a huge prize in his pile of tickets. The Missouri Lottery says that a player won a $1 million prize from the Powerball drawing on January, 2, 2023. It matched all five white-ball numbers drawn that evening. The ticket was purchased at the On the Run gas station in Rock Hill. It was months before the winner came forward. Top story: Kim Gardner faces second contempt of court hearing “I have an alarm set for me to check my tickets every three months,” the winner tells the Missouri Lottery. “So I didn’t know for a while.” His wife had a hard time believing him after he told her about the winning ticket. She thought it was a joke. The ticket was claimed at Missouri Lottery headquarters on March 29. The player plans on putting most of the money into his retire...

Jerry Springer: In Chicago, many loved him, many cringed

Image
Ald. Ed Burke questions Jerry Springer during a 1999 hearing of the City Council Police Committee. Sun-Times file If you found yourself passing through the elegant and then brand new first-floor passageways of the NBC Tower on Columbus Drive in the early 1990s, you’d often encounter a long line of jabbering, amped-up folks who were about to attend a taping of one of two nationally syndicated talk shows: “The Jenny Jones Show” or “Jerry Springer.” The former program ran for 12 seasons, as the comedian/actress Jenny Jones segued from a relatively traditional talk-show format into a lurid, tabloid format. As for Jerry Springer—he took a similar path but elevated (or more accurately, sank) it to a whole other level, eschewing a milquetoast format for tawdry themes, raucous crowd participation and on-set fights, in the process becoming a huge TV star for all the wrong reasons. (And Springer would be the first to tell you that, not that his self-awareness mitigated the odious st...

NFL Draft fashion continues to evolve

Deion Sanders, sitting next to reporter Andrea Kremer during the 1989 NFL Draft, reacts after being selected by the Atlanta Falcons. David Banks/AP HOUSTON — Deion Sanders became the NFL Draft’s first fashion icon by accessorizing a black and white track suit with loads of sparkling gold jewelry and dark shades when he took the call from the Atlanta Falcons before they selected him fifth overall in 1989. As memorable as Sanders’ draft swag remains, wearing a track suit on draft night or the jean shorts Brett Favre wore would be scoffed at today with top players gathering for a televised event that has become as much runway show as sporting event. Stablecoin issuers are responsible for ensuring that their stablecoins maintains a certain value relative to an underlying asset, such as a fiat currency or a commodity.  House Republicans Takes Lead In U.S Regulatory Landscape Described as a “starting point” for conversations about stablecoin regulation with House Democrats, the Senate, and the White House in the coming months, the bill was crafted as a renewed effort to regulate stablecoins at a federal and state level.  The proposed bill r...
